Sonoma County is where California wine keeps its oldest habits, and Dry Creek Valley — a short, green trench of a valley just outside Healdsburg — distills them: small parcels, long memories, and tasting rooms where the person pouring has usually touched the wine at every stage. Optima belongs to that species. Winemaker Mike Duffy has been handcrafting wine for more than forty years, and the house pours the way small serious houses do — limited-production and single-vineyard lots, made in quantities that mean when a wine is gone, it is simply gone.
The visit matches the wine: unhurried. There are picnic grounds and a bocce court with Dry Creek views, walk-ins are welcomed, and nobody is performing anything. A Temecula regular will feel the kinship instantly — this is the back-roads, meet-the-winemaker end of the spectrum, the Calle Contento temperament transplanted seven hundred miles north into older hills.
